Crossing the Rockies was the most difficult part of the trip, with frequent rough riding due to ruts and mud.  They were thrown off their machines and had many spills, luckily without injury. In some cases they received help from other travelers or locals. In one case they abandoned their machines after the road to Gilman, Colorado was converted into adobe mud.  After tramping into Gilman a group of miners retrieved thier bikes, only too happy to help after learning of their story.
