Augusta was the older sister and both Bronx women had previously ridden long distance before starting their transcontinental trip. One such ride took them from Amsterdam, NY to Buffalo, 325 miles in one day.

That's Gussie pictured above. It's interesting to note that there were no helmets in the 'old days', just goggles and a leather cap.

Adeline was an English Teacher, and applied to the US Army after their return.  After proving their competence as riders, and demonstrating that she could handle the rigors of riding the mountain roads, her application was rejected.
