Gussie and Addie rode the Indian Model F with the Power Plus 1000 cc twin. They were not big people, and were somewhat challenged by the size and weight of the bikes. For them, just another reason to make the trip interesting.

In New York before the Journey

Both of the sisters were active in the National Preparedness Movement which preceeded the USA's entrance into WWI.  The reason why women were denied the right to vote was often times pinned on their lack of direct participation in wartime activities.  Gussie and Addie thought that women would make excellent motorcycle dispatch riders, and wanted to prove that women could ride as well as men. If so, then men could be freed up for other tasks while the women handled the communications.
